OPPORTUNITY: ICC Launches TradeRoots Africa to Scale 1,000 SMEs Across AfCFTA Corridors
The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Centre of Entrepreneurship has officially unveiled the ICC TradeRoots Africa Programme, a targeted export development initiative designed to help African small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) scale across regional markets under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The multi-stage initiative will select up to 1,000 African SMEs, guiding them through a structured three-tier pathway from export-readiness capacity building to cross-border deal execution, trade finance, and buyer connections.
Six Pillars of Export Support
TradeRoots Africa addresses core structural barriers to intra-African commerce through six specialized support mechanisms:
- Trade Knowledge & Market Access: Export-readiness evaluations, webinars, regulatory guidance, and corridor bootcamps.
- Trade Finance Facilitation: Matchmaking with commercial banks, fintech lenders, and development finance institutions.
- Logistics, Customs & Air Transport: Operational networks and technical support to lower cross-border transit overheads.
- Digital Trade Infrastructure: Integration with e-commerce, digital payment rails, and market discovery tools.
- Executive Mentorship: Direct access to seasoned corporate executives and international trade practitioners.
- Business Development: Technical support to refine business models, cross-border pricing, and commercial scaling strategies.
The Three-Tier Export Acceleration Pathway
The program is structured over a ten-month execution timeline, narrowing focus to high-performing participants at each stage:
- Tier 1 — Trade Foundations (November 2026 – March 2027): Up to 1,000 SMEs will undertake virtual and blended learning modules covering trade compliance, customs documentation, and AfCFTA framework mechanics.
- Tier 2 — Digital & Sector Skills (April – June 2027): Up to 200 shortlisted SMEs advance to targeted training in e-commerce deployment, sustainability integration, regional corridor bootcamps, and direct buyer matchmaking.
- Tier 3 — Export Acceleration (July – August 2027): A finalized group of up to 50 high-potential exporters will receive intensive support to finalize transaction structures, secure trade finance, and execute export contracts.
Important Note for Applicants: TradeRoots Africa is an export development and commercial facilitation program, not a direct grant or loan provider. Its objective is to prepare SMEs to successfully raise trade finance and secure commercial export deals.

Applications are open to majority African-owned SMEs operating legally in any AfCFTA State Party—including South Africa, Botswana, Kenya, Nigeria, Egypt, Ghana, Rwanda, and Uganda, among others.
