ITAC Imposes duties on top load washing machines from China and Thailand

Defy Appliances (Pty) Ltd made an application to ITAC alleging that fully automatic top load machines, of a dry linen capacity exceeding 10 kg but less than 17 kg, were being imported into SACU at dumped prices. The company is the only producer of the subject product in the Southern African Customs Union (SACU). Fully Automatic top load washing machines is a category of electrical popular household or laundry appliance that is used to wash laundry.

After considering comments and responses from interested parties, the Commission made a final determination that there was sufficient information to indicate that dumping of fully automatic top load machines, of a dry linen capacity exceeding 10 kg but less than 17 kg is indeed taking place, and that the SACU industry was experiencing material injury because of the dumped imports from the People’s Republic of China (China) and the Kingdom of Thailand (Thailand).

Consequently, the Commission has requested the Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service (SARS) to impose definitive anti-dumping duties on imports from China and Thailand classifiable under tariff subheading 8450.20.20. These definitive anti-dumping duties were implemented by SARS on 23 April 2026
