India Consulate in Johannesburg to end VFS Global Services on 31 January 2026
The Consulate General of India in Johannesburg has announced that the engagement of VFS Global as its authorised Consular Outsourcing Service Provider will conclude on 31 January 2026.
This is according to a statement released by the Consulate General of India social media platforms.
From 1 February 2026, all Consular, Passport and Visa (CPV) services will be handled directly by the Consulate, strictly via an online appointment system. This includes services such as passports, visas, Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards, surrender certificates, attestations and other consular services.
Applicants have been cautioned not to transfer any fees to VFS Global after 31 January 2026, as the service provider will no longer be authorised to accept applications or payments on behalf of the Consulate beyond that date.
Why it matters
The change is particularly significant for South African businesses, exporters, investors and professionals with commercial links to India. India remains one of South Africa’s most important trading partners, with growing engagement across sectors such as pharmaceuticals, mining, automotive manufacturing, ICT and professional services.
For companies that rely on business travel, executive mobility and specialist skills exchange, the shift to a direct, appointment-only system could affect processing times, planning cycles and travel readiness, especially during peak periods. Businesses and trade bodies are advised to factor the new process into their travel and compliance planning, ensuring applications are submitted well in advance to avoid delays.
The move also reflects a broader trend of diplomatic missions seeking greater control over service delivery, data security and operational efficiency – an issue of increasing relevance as cross-border trade and investment flows continue to expand.
