OPPORTUNITY: Unlock £2.5 Million: UK launches new Science & Technology Accelerator fund for Southern Africa
By SA Trade Desk Editorial
At SA Trade Desk, our mission is to identify, track, and amplify high-impact economic opportunities between South Africa and key global trading partners. The United Kingdom remains one of South Africa’s most vital economic allies, with bilateral ties spanning green energy, manufacturing, financial services, and trade.
A major frontier in this bilateral relationship lies in the Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) sector. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has officially opened calls for Expressions of Interest (EOI) for its flagship Science and Technology Accelerator – Systems (STA-S) Southern Africa Programme.
This £2.5 million initiative (running through March 2030) presents a significant opportunity for South African researchers, universities, technology incubators, and innovation ecosystem builders to secure funding and deepen UK–Southern Africa collaboration.
Understanding the STA-S Programme
The STA-S programme addresses a critical barrier in the region: bridging the gap between scientific research and commercial/societal application.
While Southern Africa boasts world-class research hubs, converting cutting-ahead concepts into scalable market solutions requires stronger enabling environments, regulatory clarity, and commercialisation pathways.
With South Africa serving as the primary geographic anchor—alongside initial Year 1 expansion into Zimbabwe and Zambia—the STA-S programme targets high-growth technological pillars:
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Emerging Tech
- Digital Access & Socio-Economic Inclusion
- Climate, Clean Energy & Decarbonisation
- Health Technologies & Space Sciences
The Two Programme Pillars
Rather than funding isolated tech projects, the FCDO is targeting system-level change through two integrated components:
- STI Policy & Enabling Systems: Strengthening institutional regulations, national innovation frameworks, and cross-border partnership conditions across Southern Africa.
- Inclusive Commercialisation & Entrepreneurship: Building institutional capability to help researchers and startups commercialise IP, scale ventures, and access private capital markets.
Who Can Participate & How to Apply
The FCDO is seeking a multi-partner consortium to design and deliver the 3-year programme.
| Criteria | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Lead Partner | Must be a Not-for-Profit entity (NGO, educational institution, UK non-profit, or LMIC-based non-profit) capable of managing an FCDO accountable grant. |
| Consortium Structure | For-profit businesses, tech hubs, private equity groups, and strategy consultancies are actively encouraged to participate as consortium members. |
| Compliance | Lead partners and funded activities must comply with Official Development Assistance (ODA) guidelines. |
Application Steps & Key Deadlines
Following a deadline extension, applicants have until 26 August 2026 at 11:59 PM (UK Time) to submit their expressions of interest.
- Complete the EOI Form: Submissions must be logged via the official UK Government Microsoft Form.
- Email Supporting Documents: Send the detailed budget (Excel format) and key team CVs (PDF format) to
STASSouthernAfrica@fcdo.gov.ukwith the subject line:Expression of Interest: STA-S Southern Africa Programme. - Shortlisting: Successful candidates shortlisted for full proposals will be contacted by 14 September 2026.
For South African institutions looking to scale technological impact and deepen international trade and innovation links, the STA-S programme represents a powerful strategic opportunity.
